Sideways Arithmetic Unit

I've been working hard on something to do after our dreaded state tests are over with....something I think my 5th graders will LOVE. Last year, I ordered a class set of Louis Sachar's novel Sideways Arithmetic From Wayside School. At first I thought it would be too babyish for my kids, but after I read it and tried to solve the math puzzles, I decided it would be perfect. It really could be used in 4th or 5th {high 3rd graders} I've searched the Internet high and low for some kind of activities to go along with this book. Nothing. So, what do I do...I write my own. I call this a unit, but really its just a guide that goes hand in hand with the story. I re-wrote all the problems so that all the kids have to do is work the puzzles and place their answers down on paper. If you haven't read this book, there are 50 something math puzzles throughout the story that the reader is to solve...

I am envisioning this happening with cooperative learning groups, whole group read alouds, some independent work...the whole 9 yards. I'm excited.

Following in the footsteps of the great Babbling Abby, I too have a store at TpT. {Teachers Pay Teachers} If you are interested in buying this unit, feel free to check out my store by clicking below:

Music

I know this is going to sound very Peyton Sawyer of me, (shout out to all you OTH fans) but have you ever noticed the power of music?

"People say music doesn't change lives, whatever...have you ever heard a song and it takes you back to a certain moment in your life? Like you can pinpoint exactly where you were and the exact time..."
-Peyton Sawyer

Peyton was one of my favorite characters on One Tree Hill and I'm very disappointed they took her off (VERY!) but I think she was totally on to something when she talked about music...
{hear me out}

Today as I drove myself to work, sunroof open seat warmers on, I played {ok, blared} "Single" by NKOTB. I know, I know...but this song gives me a feeling I can't easily explain every time I hear it. I takes me back to October 2008 to American Airlines Center where I got to see my favorite childhood group preform 20 years later. It was the opening song as they flashed all the old pictures on the screen, exactly how I remembered them. Maybe this makes me weird, I don't know...and quite frankly...I really don't care because it means something to me.

I have a lot of special songs that the second I hear them takes me to a happy place.

My Girl instantly makes me want to call my dad and sing in his ear...
Somewhere Out There makes me want to call my sister Natalie and sing together looking up at the sky...
Seasons of Love make me want to call and sing to Lindsey... {mainly to hear her hit that super high note}
The second I hear I Call It Love I think of Love Bug and I on the Riverwalk in Shreveport...singing together. <---ha!

Music is a great thing. I admit I may not always know the lyrics, to be honest, you'll probably find me making up my own most of the time, but I love it. The beat, the way it allows you to remember your exact existence in time, the way it can capture your thoughts and feelings...and make sense of your world.

Am I crazy...or are there others that share this same feeling?

Sons & Daughters

As I've shared before, my brother in law David is apart of a group called Sons & Daughters. You may remember the article from this post. He is one talented boy, that's for sure.

He has already done tons of great things in his little life. Including starting the group Jackson Waters. Hello. Awesomeness. You may have loved their music featured on One Tree Hill. I know I did. (This is also the reason I started watching OTH, and I'm still currently obsessed!) The group is no longer together, obviously, but you can listen to their music here. {I'm waiting on the reunion tour!} From Jackson Waters he went to traveling with Needtobreathe for 2 years...which brings us to now. He is following his heart, writing worship music and signing with Leslie Jordan. I am one proud sister in law. He is so inspiring to us all...

His first single comes out on iTunes on April 5th. I LOVE this song and I think you will too.
The EP (6 songs) comes out on May 10th and the full length album on October 11th.

If you "like" their Facebook page you can sample the music and it will also give you information on how to download free music on their website. {www.sonsanddaughtersmusic.com}

The more people who know about them the better. I hope you will enjoy their music as much as I do.

Bowl For Kids Sake

About 3 years ago, my school started participating in Bowl For Kids Sake. Y'all...It is SO MUCH fun! We have 4 teams, all with different names and shirts. It is just the neatest thing to get such a diverse group of people together and all have fun. Hands down, we are definitely the funnest people there...by far. {Even the DJ thinks so!}

This picture was taken last year, because I don't have this years picture yet...but at least you can get the idea of how we roll.

My game face...headed to the bowling alley. lol
I have the pleasure of being the Team Captain for our team..the Wild Turkeys! Today we raised $750 for our team to bowl.
A big shout out to all the people who sponsored me today. We helped such a great cause. THANK YOU!

Oh yes...and we even started our dance from last nights Talent Show on the lanes. WINNING!

I'll Take That...

With this beautiful 80 degree weather we are having, I've found myself ready for the new spring/ summer wardrobe. Tonight I spent a good amount of time on one of my favorite store's website...Forever 21.

Just a little background knowledge...
I tend to find a look I like {stripes, polka dots, certain colors, etc} and that's all I buy! For example...this fall I looked back at the things I'd bought and almost all of it was STRIPED! I seriously got home at least 3 times to find a shirt that was VERY similar to something I already had. It's like I find one cute thing and I can't stop. It's annoying.

So tonight, I wanted to do a little experiment. I thought I'd go through the Forever 21 website and pick out the things I like. I just want to see if in the seasons past this has just been a coincidence or in fact, this is just me.

Here are some of my favorite things from F21 for spring and summer.

Are you laughing yet?!?  I did...when I looked at the pictures I had chosen. I picked out all these cream and nude colors like I'm tan or something. Cute looks and if I was brave enough to order online from F21, I probably would've picked up a few...BUT at this store, I HAVE to try it on. <---Please tell me I'm not the only one!!!

Verdict...IT'S ME!

What I'm Loving Wednesday

I'm joining up with Jamie on this beautiful evening for
What I'm Loving Wednesday!
I am Loving...that I got to spend the day with the most adorable {almost} one year old ever! My mom and I got up at 5:30am and drove over to Arkansas to hang out with Harper all day while her parents were hard at work. :)

We took her to get her 1 year old pictures today and they we SO cute! Since the pictures were part of my present to her, I feel like I have the right to display her pictures before her mother. :)

Here is our BIG girl!

Tulsa Treasures

Every time I come to Tulsa there are a handful of places we MUST visit while I'm here. I wish sooo bad that DFW would buy a franchise, but so far, no luck. If ever in Tulsa, these are my favorite places. :)

All Time Family Favorite...
I'm fairly certain that if anyone was asked what my
families favorite restaurant is their answer would
 be Chimi's. We only eat here for every occasion.

There will never be a time that I come to Tulsa without eating at these 3 places. Fact.

Ron's Hamburgers
Only the best, greasiest hamburgers EVER.
Their Chili is also pretty amazing as well.
O.M.G.
Rib Crib
Love this place. Especially their Chicken Quesadillas.
Mazzio's
Surely you've heard of this place...No? Oh my goodness...my mouth is watering as I am typing this. They have THE BEST salad bar you have ever had. This {again} is a fact.
For the record, this does it no justice, please trust me though--->THE BEST!

Old School Bagels
Whoevers idea it was to get rid of EVERY SINGLE bagel shop in Tulsa was crazy. This was the best start to my day back in high school {yes, we ate their every day...before and after school}

Moving right along...these are also my favorites that I try to go everytime because I LOVE them too!

Ted's Cafe Escondido
Favorite part about this restaurant is the complimentary queso with your chips and salsa AND sopapillas at the end

Daylight Donuts
Historical Tulsa Landmark. lol
Just so that you know, Daylight Donuts are better than Shipley's, Dunkin, DEFINITELY Krispy Kremes or any other donut shop out there.

Most of these restaurants can also be found in the Oklahoma City area as well :)
I thought I should note that when I was thinking this post up, I had every intention for it to have all kinds of favorite places...but I am hungry as I'm writing this and all I can think about is {clearly} food. :)
